Rice Cultivation in Natura 2000 Sites: Axios Delta and Albufera Wetland

An important dimension of sustainable rice farming in Europe concerns the protection of sensitive ecosystems linked to Natura 2000 sites. In Greece, the rice fields in the Axios Delta are included in the Natura 2000 network, and likewise in Spain, the Albufera area of Valencia is a Natura 2000 protected area with great ecological value. Rice producers in these areas are required to implement practices that are in line with the objectives of biodiversity and wetland protection, in accordance with the provisions of the Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC and the Birds Directive 2009/147/EC.

This means:

1

Restrictions on the use of pesticides and fertilizers:

To avoid water pollution and maintain hydrological balance.
2

Conservation of wetland ecosystems:

Irrigation management so that it does not cause drainage or degradation of wetlands.

3

Adoption of sustainable farming practices:

Such as Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD), the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) and crop rotation, which aid in reducing the environmental footprint.

Compliance with Natura 2000 legislation strengthens the balance between farming and nature conservation, allowing producers to cultivate with respect for the sensitive environment of these areas, while ensuring the long-term sustainability of crops.
